Privacy Concerns raised over Facebook -WhatsApp deal
by [email protected] · March 10, 2014
On March 6, a US-based privacy group asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to review, and if required block, the Facebook-WhatsApp deal to guard the privacy of over 450 million users who installed the app on their phones.
In its complaint to the FTC on March 6, Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) says that Facebook regularly collects all data that it possibly can on its users and that exposes Whatsapp users to privacy risks.
Announcing the deal, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said “WhatsApp will continue to operate independently within Facebook”.
His words were echoed by Jan Koum, WhatsApp CEO and co-founder. “You can continue to enjoy the service for a nominal fee. And you can still count on absolutely no ads interrupting your communication. There would have been no partnership between our two companies if we had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product,” he wrote on the company’s official blog.
